Much has been written about south Florida’s problems with non-native giant snakes, but according to this story officials are now faced with the frightening prospect of hybrid "super snakes" slithering amok.

Fears of a new "super snake" emerging in the Everglades grew this week during a hunt to track South Florida’s invasive python population. A three-day, state-coordinated hunt that started Tuesday had, by Wednesday, turned up at least five African rock pythons — including a 14-foot-long female — in a targeted area in Miami-Dade County. Those findings add to concerns that the African rock python is a new breeding population in the Everglades and not just the result of a few overgrown pets being released into the wild, according to the South Florida Water Management District.

In addition, state environmental officials worry that the rock python could breed with the Burmese python, which already has an established foothold in the Everglades. That could lead to a new "super snake," said George Horne, the water district’s deputy executive director. In Africa, the rock python eats creatures as large as goats and crocodiles. There have been cases of the snakes killing children. "They are bigger and meaner than the Burmese python. It’s not good news," said Deborah Drum, deputy director of the district’s restoration sciences department.

Personally, I think this is a great cast-n-blast opportunity for outdoorsmen from boring old native-fauna-only states like mine. I’ve always wanted to fish for peacock bass in the canals around Miami-Dade. What if you combined that with a trophy hybrid "super snake" hunting trip? Lots of guys travel to the southern states to hunt alligators. Why not giant snakes? It’s becoming more and more apparent that exotic constrictors are established, and they’re there to stay. And I have to admit, the prospect of hunting a creature pushing twenty feet long is intriguing. If the price was right, would you travel to hunt such a super snake?

Florida officials plan to host an ole’-fashioned snake hunt – intended to root out the state’s population of ravenous Burmese pythons, which is ravaging the Everglades by eating everything in sight.

The great ‘Python challenge’ of 2013 is open any wrangler with the contest fee, the 30 minutes necessary to complete an online course, and the stomach to tromp through a reedy landscape in search of carnivorous snakes that can grow to as big as 18 feet in length.

‘Whichever method they use, hunters have an ethical obligation to dispatch the snake as humanely as possible,’ Carli Segelson, a spokeswoman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, told FoxNews.com.

Nearly 400 hardy souls have already enlisted in the unorthodox, month-long competition, which begins Jan. 12. Its rules mandate that hunters leave the captured pythons at official drop-off sites within 24 hours of their being caught.

‘We are also using the Challenge to gauge the effectiveness of using an incentive-based model as one tool to address a challenging invasive species management problem,’ Segelson reoportedly said.

Coakley added the contest, complete with a ,500 cash prize for the largest wrangled constrictor, might convince some clever participants to merely purchase a python out-of-state on the cheap – and then submit it as one captured in the Everglades.

However, the FWC reportedly said it will put an unspecified number of game wardens on the ground in the Everglades region to ensure hunters are following the rules, as well as, staying safe.

FoxNews.com reports that Burmese pythons are generally not dangerous to humans because the snakes are often afraid of their greater height.

Still, the website reports that snakes are capable of killing a child and some experts say the larger pythons could even overpower – and kill – an adult in certain circumstances. The Burmese python kills by squeezing its prey, then swallowing it.

All American Gator, which harvests wild alligators for use in clothing, accessories and furniture, reportedly has said it will buy larger pythons captured during the hunt.

‘Aside from the obvious goal of reducing the Burmese python population in the Everglades,’ Segelson reportedly said, ‘we also hope to educate the public about Burmese pythons in Florida and how people can help limit the impact of this and other invasive species in Florida.’

Florida’s python problem apparently stems from a few misanthropes who once harbored the snakes as pets – but then released them into the wild. The snakes typically feed on the Everglades’ indigenous populations of raccoons, deer and bobcats.

For its part, FoxNews.com reports there could be as many as tens of thousands of the snakes residing in the Everglades.

The Three Sisters of the Hill Country on FM 337 (Picture a Day September 24, 2009)

Nestled up in the Frio Canyon region of the Texas Hill Country are three highways that are known as the Three Sisters, or the Twisted Sisters. Roughly a hundred miles long, the FM 335/336/337 loop is popular among weekend warriors and motorcycle enthusiasts for its sharp turns, steep climbs, deep valleys and scenic views as the roads pass through some of the hill-iest of the Hill Country. Compared to many of the mountain passes through California or Colorado, this is pre-school-level stuff – but in this part of the country and for hundreds of miles around, the Three Sisters is the most ‘challenging’ roadways around. This spot is near sunset, along a deep road cut on FM 337 between Vanderpool and Medina overlooking Anderson Hollow; the structure in the background is actually a large barn for a buffalo herd. The New York Times’ notoriously inflammatory reviewer, Michiko Kakutani, says that without wands and wizards, Rowling’s story is left with little more than the stodgy, petty Muggles found in the opening scenes of the Harry Potter books. She has a point Like Harry’s quarrelsome Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon, the adult characters in “Vacancy” allow small-stakes bickering to evolve into absurd melodrama. But small moments shared between the younger characters are evocative, and sometimes even magical. “This isn’t a book that’s easy to fall in love with, the way Harry Potter was with its charming, winning hero and his plucky friends, saving the world from evil with the help of a powerful spell or two. Even with its moments of humor, it’s a hard story where some people just don’t get saved, because really, they never had a chance. It’s filled with often unlikable people, some of whom cross the line into terrible. They’re all unhappy in one way or another, even if the only people who know that are themselves, if that.” These are all fair statements, but I don’t believe they subtract from the quality of the book, or even make it difficult to recognize the similarities between this darker novel and Rowling’s more optimistic Young Adult stories.
