Congressman Tonko fights Irresponsible Republican cuts.
I rise today in strong opposition to the Republican spending bill currently before this house. This bill fails to create jobs, deeply hurts our families and seniors and responds with extremes at a time when our fragile economy can least afford it. I’m committed to a budget that lives within our means while investing in the future and cutting our deficit, however this irresponsible republican spending bill hampers job creation and jeopardizes investment in American innovation, American education and American infrastructure. That’s why President Obama vowed to veto the bill, because it undermines critical priorities for national security and curtails the drivers of long-term economic growth and job creation. We must do more to focus on jobs, grow the economy, and protect our middle class, certainly while responsibly tackling our nation’s debt and deficit. That is why I have offered eight amendments to this bill which will protect seniors, protect energy innovation, strengthen our children’s education, and most importantly will protect and grow jobs as the fragile economy slowly recovers. We simply cannot afford to pull the rug out from underneath progress — not now, not when we are finally rebounding from the bush recession, not with the extreme spending bill this represents. I refuse to take America back to the failed policies that sunk our economy. My first two amendments would restore funding from the cuts to the Social Security Administration, to prevent its shut down …

LIKE MY FACEBOOK PAGE: facebook.com I don’t think that the schools designated as “drop out factories” are the result of, or that they feed off of their surrounding environment. I think the exact opposite. I believe that the surrounding environment is fed from the drop out factory, and that this creates generation after generation of people who lack the education, and kinds of skills needed to succeed in the workplace, and acquire a career that would give them a salary decent enough to turn away from crime. Countless millions of kids watch their parents, wishing that they had gotten a career rather than a slew of temporary jobs for employment, and then join them surviving paycheck to paycheck, and hoping that their own kids can have a better life. For some this can provide a sort of spark, that would propel them forward to want to succeed. For most others, this constant stream of evidence to the contrary causes them to form a bleak outlook on their own lives. They no longer look at themselves as worth it anymore. They see their lives for what the system had destined for them to be, and slowly lose any aspirations and hopes for a brighter future for themselves. And where are these kinds of failing schools located? They’re located in low-income neighborhoods, where there are higher concentration of Black and Latino families. And like I’ve said before, there are some kids that rise above, but for the most part, attendants of these dropout schools, with no real ambition in …

Texas Republican slams Bush “demented philosophy of conquest
Full story at www.thebluestate.com Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX) stood his ground and joined the twenty-or-so other Republicans that have decided to vote with the House Democrats in favor of a non-binding Iraq resolution that condemns President Bush’s troop surge. Speaking of Bush, Congressman Paul was very straight-forward in his displeasure for Bush’s “demented philosophy of conquest.” Here is a portion of his floor speech: RON PAUL: “In recent decades, our policies have been driven by neoconservative empire radicalism; profiteering in the military industrial complex; misplaced do-good internationalism; mercantilistic notions regarding the need to control natural resources; and blind loyalty to various governments in the Middle East.” You can add Ron Paul’s name to the small list of the few level-headed Republicans left in Congress.

Rachel Maddow: Michigan’s Dystopian (Corporate Republican) Future And Naomi Klein’s Shock Doctrine
Clip from March 8, 2011, The Rachel Maddow Show where Rachel highlights the scary, dystopian corporate Republican efforts to use the manufactured “after shocks” of the economic crisis to overturn the will of Michigan and other states’ voters, to bust unions unilaterally, and to turn (ie, privatize) traditional government functions over to their crony capitalists. In that context, Rachel examines “disaster capitalism” with Naomi Klein, the author of the best-selling book, “The Shock Doctrine.”

Republican hypocrisy exposed: top GOP lawmakers take credit for stimulus bill passage
House Republicans, as a group, may take great pride in the goose egg they offered President Obama’s stimulus package. But now the unanimous opposition is struggling to bring that money home. Republicans will be working hard to make sure the money they opposed ends up benefiting their home districts, highlighting the political tightrope they walk in this economic crisis. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is watching House Republicans — and reading local media — closely and is only too happy to highlight any happy talk about a stimulus Republicans voted against. Back in his home district, Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-MO) found some nice things to say about the plan. “Within the stimulus package there is some Pell Grant money, which is a good thing. It helps students be able to pay for their education and that’s kind of a long term stimulus effect there. I mean obviously that’s not gonna provide a job in the next 120, 180 days, but the ability of someone to get an education is an economic development tool,” Luetkemeyer said at a local college. He was there, in another inside-outside Washington twist, to celebrate an earmark for a college building. He lamented that there would be far fewer such earmarks in the future. “If they go back to the rules, it will make it very difficult to get earmarks through the next two years because number one we don’t have any more money, we just blew it all on this stimulus package. Although, we’re gonna have to print some more in …
