It is extremely important to be aware of your own health changes, and to know that they are likely to occur if your caregiving becomes a full-time job. Brave Nurses – Circumcision Video
Sheila Curran, RN recalls the events that led to her making the video “Informed Consent” documenting infant circumcision. Sheila is one of the founding members of NOCIRC, National Organization of Circumcision Information and Resource Centers. Curran and Marilyn Milos, RN used their video to educate parents-to-be about the reality of circumcision, so that “consent” for circumcision could truly be informed. The video is still being used effectively to educate. Since Curran’s video was made the circumcision rate in the US has dropped to 32.5% (according to recent figures from the CDC.) The pioneering work these brave nurses began 30 years ago continues to inspire human rights activists for genital integrity world wide. Violence is a leading cause of premature death in San Franciscos low-income communities. Youth face harm in the very places meant to nurture them—at home, school, and in their neighborhoods. These same children experience increased risk of chronic medical, mental health, substance abuse, educational and employment issues as adults, trapping them in a downward spiral of poverty and violence.
