Boche store train smashed by our shells at Clary Station, near Peronne

Image by National Library of Scotland
A long line of open-topped railway carriages have been shattered by shellfire. They are carrying wood, a valuable resource for both sides at the Front. Railways were a vital means of transporting troops, supplies and equipment across the Front. Any disruption to the network, therefore, had major repercussions. As such, roads, railways and bridges were often prime enemy targets.
The derogatory term for a German, ‘Boche’ or ‘Bosch’, originates from the French slang ‘alboche’, which was two words ‘Allemand’ (German) and ‘caboche’ (pate, head) put together. This image and the accompanying caption are a good example of the type of positive propaganda fed to those at home by the Government and Military. It reinforced the belief that the Allies had the upper hand.
[Original reads: 'BRITISH OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH FROM THE WESTERN FRONT. THE FALL OF PERONNE. Boche store train smashed by our shells at Clary Station, near Peronne.']
