Cambodia: THE FORCED LABOR OF ANGKAR LEU/CAP TREN 1975-79 (10/11) [KH-EN]
This was originally a popular distinction but it became standard party language. And the old people carried it one step farther. They felt burdened and threatened by the influx of new people into their zones at wars end. The party gave them more responsibility than they wanted without the necessary wherewithal to cope, or any reward for fulfilling their new duties. They considered themselves generous for simply giving these new people a space to lay their heads and enough food to keep them alive. When the people came from Phnom Penh they had nothing and we gave them everything, said the leader of one cooperative in the South-western zone. They couldnt do any of the tasks. We had to teach them how cultivate and harvest. They weren’t worth anything in the first year. During 1975, there were no specific new directives. The party was relying on the old people to save the situation and somehow produce a surplus harvest at the end of the year. The old people took advantage of this administration by fiat to create a new cooperative hierarchy that would put them at the top, protect their privileges (property), and put the new people at the bottom. The second category was probationary or candidate membership. Fewer new people were accepted immediately into this category, which allowed them some participation in the management of the cooperative, the use of better tools, and a better share of the rations. They were also more likely to given the benefits of the doubt if they failed …

Report: Zambia’s Chinese-Run Mines Violate Labor Laws
Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com International human rights organization “Human Rights Watch” issued a report that severely criticized the Chinese invested mining companies in Zambia, saying they ignore workers’ rights and seriously violate local labor laws. The Chinese Foreign Affairs spokesperson Hong Lei denied the allegations at a press conference. Scholars indicated that the Chinese official was lying and his statement, without an investigation, was very irresponsible. The report by “Human Rights Watch” runs over 100 pages. It detailed the results of three research missions to Zambia’s four Chinese copper operations in November 2010 and July 2011. These four Chinese companies in Zambia are subsidiaries of China Non-Ferrous Metals Mining Corporation, a state-owned enterprise under the authority of China’s highest executive body. The report reveals that workers in these Chinese-run mines work overtime every day, sometimes up to 18 hours working time, and mine safety and regulations are subject to companies’ indifference. For instance, inadequate ventilation results in hazy smoke in the mines that can lead to serious lung diseases, failing to replace workers’ damaged protective equipment, and routinely threatening to fire workers who refuse to work in unsafe places. Director of the Institute of Contemporary Observation in Shenzhen, Dr. Liu Kaiming: “It’s the habit of the Chinese enterprises. They might have continued their habit in …

karmavision.tv As the price of gas hits record highs, alternative fuel sources continue to be debated. One alternative fuel which has been touted for years as a renewable, low-emission resource that could replace oil is gaining momentum. More than four million vehicles on the road today can run on gasoline as well as ethanol, the clean-burning fuel made from corn and other biomass sources. The number of stations offering ethanol has also jumped 60 percent since the beginning of the year. Current flexible fuel vehicles can run on as much as 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. A gallon of ethanol is 20 to 30 cents less than regular gasoline, with little difference in ease-of-use at the pump or car performance. General Motors says as much as 30 percent of our gasoline consumption could be replaced by ethanol if it were to become available across the country.
