Martha Jane Murray – Founders Day Convocation 2009 (part 2/2)

Hendrix College awarded Odyssey Medals to seven alumni whose life achievements exemplify Your Hendrix Odyssey during a special ceremony as part of the colleges annual Founders Day Oct. 22. The recipients were honored during a convocation in Staples Auditorium on the Hendrix campus. Martha Jane Murray 77 works for the William J. Clinton Foundation Climate Initiative where she serves as a policy associate to address global warming with large scale and replicable green building projects. Her past work included an emphasis on green buildings in healthcare, neighborhood planning, residential and camp structures. An architect, Murray was the first LEED Accredited Professional in Arkansas and the founding chair of the USGBC-Arkansas Chapter. She was one of five national core committee members who organized the national USGBC GreenBuild 2005 response for the Katrina sustainable rebuilding effort. She spent two years working on sustainable rebuilding strategies for New Orleans, particularly in the public school system. Murray was the LEED AP on the first LEED Gold certified project in the state of Arkansas. As a passionate researcher and design practitioner of green buildings, she has made numerous other public presentations including participating as a master speaker at the USGBC GreenBuild 2009, the Arkansas Governors School, Atlantas Greenprints Conference, ASHRAEs Regional Conference, Rebuild Americas Regional Peer Exchange and the USGBCs GreenBuild 2004 Chapter Day. Jane Kittel – Managing Director BankSA

“The SA economy and where it is headed ” Jane Kittel was born and raised in Port Augusta, and educated at Caritas College. Upon leaving school, she worked in a variety of roles for AMP in Adelaide, and completed a Bachelor of Management (Employee Relations) with the University of South Australia. She also gained a Bachelor of Teaching (Vocational Education) with distinction from the University of Technology, Sydney and, in 1995, she joined Westpac to begin a career in banking. Ms Kittel then went on to fill a number of leadership roles within Westpac including sourcing, risk management, learning and development, human resources and head of corporate services. In 2006, she was appointed general manager of Westpac’s Pacific Banking operation, with responsibilities for seven countries – Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Cook Islands, Tonga, Solomon Islands and Samoa. In October 2010, Ms Kittel was appointed Managing Director of BankSA, and in that role she oversees South Australia’s largest financial institution with 118 branches in South Australia, and four in the Northern Territory. She also serves as a board member of BusinessSA and Catherine House, is chair of the University of South Australia’s MBA advisory board, and is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Living on the shores of Lake Michigan, I am acutely aware of the disastrous toll the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has taken on all forms of life, especially as our beaches opened to the 2010 swimming season. This environmental, social and economic catastrophe highlights a much larger problem that has inflicted untold suffering as we exploit the earth’s resources worldwide. We are all responsible for leading lives that create demand for unsustainable energy. We are also all responsible for the solution and we must work together to protect the balance of life.

The Blondness Presentation Abstract This presentation describes and evaluates the technical, political, and economic challenges involved with widespread adoption of renewable energy technologies. First, we estimate the available fossil fuel resources and reserves based on data from the World Energy Assessment and World Energy Council. In conjunction with the current and projected global primary power production rates, we then estimate the remaining years of supply of oil, gas, and coal for use in primary power production. We then compare the price per unit of energy of these sources to those of renewable energy technologies (wind, solar thermal, solar electric, biomass, hydroelectric, and geothermal) to evaluate the degree to which supply/demand forces stimulate a transition to renewable energy technologies in the next 20-50 years. Second, we evaluate the greenhouse gas buildup limitations on carbon-based power consumption as an unpriced externality to fossil-fuel consumption, considering global population growth, increased global gross domestic product, and increased energy efficiency per …
