Climate Change: We Saw It Happen (story from Nanighi community, Kenya)
Elders from Nanighi community, Farfi district, Kenya, are seeing the impacts of more severe and frequent drought. They have seen many changes over the decades in both drought and other problems that have led to the land being unsuitable to sustain their pastoralist tradition. They have had to turn to farming as a way to make a living. Climate change is not the only challenge in Nanighi as the community is experiencing the burden of poverty, environmental degradation, land rights issues, and a heavy reliance on the natural resource base for livelihoods. CARE is working with Nanighi, and five other nearby communities through the Adaptation Learning Programme, which has an overarching goal to increase the capacity of vulnerable households in Sub-Saharan Africa to adapt to climate variability and change. As part of programme, the elders from Nanighi community partnered with CARE and local journalists to learn how to create digital stories that show how they impacted by drought, and their coping strategies. Together they will build on this knowledge to create and implement adaptation strategies. They will continue to monitor and share their learnings through digital photo stories, especially with policy-makers and others who can support their efforts.
