CHICAGO’S O’HARE AIRPORT GOES GREENER WITH THE WORLD’S FIRST VERTICAL FARM
Airports and fresh produce are traditionally not two things that go hand in hand. Between all the fast food joints, sustainable or locally grown food is not on the list of dining options in major travel hubs in the United States. GOING GREEN TAKES OFF… Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport is looking to change that with the world’s first vertical farming garden. Deputy Commissioner of Sustainability Amy Malick has helped make this possible. “The garden came to be under Commissioner Rosemarie Andolino and she got the idea from a TV program that she saw.” It produces more than 40 types of pesticide free, organic vegetables and herbs for some of the airport’s restaurants. “Our passengers deserve more in the way of fresh and healthy food.” Habanero peppers, cilantro, thyme, oregano and green beans are just a few of the many crops that grow here. HMSHost Assistant General Manager Brad Maher explains how they can mature in as little as four weeks. “We plant seedlings and how it works….So there’s no soil involved in this.” Aeroponic gardening provides food year round and requires no weed pulling. Going green has not only taken off at the Chicago airport but right here on the Columbia College campus. “We have a green roof on 33 East Congress and at the new MPC building on 16th and state.” Rooftop gardens and farms reduce energy consumption, reduce carbon emissions and provide sustainable food supplies for less. “They do farm on them and can take things and eat. It’s all …

Minecraft Cast Away – #18 – Obsidian Farm
Welcome to Minecraft 1.1 in Minecraft Cast Away! I’ve started a brand new world with the seed “292202″ which, along with being the official distance traveled in my Far Lands or Bust world, is a seed that spawns you in the middle of an ocean without a single tree. In today’s episode, after recovering from our turbulent visit to the Nether, we make plans on what fun things we can do in our Cast Away world before Minecraft 1.2 is released. I’ve decided on a few rules for Cast Away to keep things interesting: 1) Play on HARD difficulty setting! 2) No setting new spawn points! I can sleep, but have to break the bed immediately after. This way, if I die, I am sent all the way back to the original spawn point on the deserted island. Thanks for watching! Like, favorite, subscribe and let me know what you think in the comments! Webinar – Hydric Soils and the Farm Bill (3/2012)

Hydric soil identification is used in farm planning as one of three factors needed for the identification and delineation of wetlands subject to Swampbuster. It is also used for the identification of areas that qualify for wetland restoration programs such as WRP. Proper use of the definition, criteria, field indicators, and technical standard is needed to accurately identify those areas that contain hydric soils. The National Technical Committee for Hydric Soils was established to assist NRCS in updating and refining the tools we use to identify hydric soils. New Field Indicators of Hydric Soils in the United States, changes to the criteria we use to establish which map unit components should be identified as hydric on the National List of Hydric Soils, and the use of IRIS tubes to identify anaerobic conditions that satisfy the hydric soil technical standard are some of the recent changes that have been made based on deliberations of the Committee.
