On December 26th, 2005 I was flying from Saigon, Vietnam into Bangkok, Thailand. I had been covering the AIDS epidemic as well as poverty and urban slums for the past two months from both Cambodia and Vietnam and was looking forward to a week of down time with friends. The Asian Tsunami struck only moments before my plane landed in Bangkok and I was on one of the first flights to Phuket the next day. I covered the devastation from both Thailand and Sri Lanka during the following weeks. As an ex disaster specialist I still had many friends working in the filed all over the world at that time and in the year following the Tsunami I kept in close contact with them. Only months after the Tsunami struck, I began to hear stories, as I expected, of how western money coupled with the tourism industry was rebuilding Thailand with record speed while Sri Lanka and Banda Aceh, Indonesia were left with few resources. Slightly ahead of the one year anniversary of the Asian Tsunami, I decided to return to Thailand where I re-shot each image taken the year before from the exact same angle at nearly the same time of day. Unfortunately I was not able to get the funding necessary to do the same comparison project in Sri Lanka. It was another example demand and marketing concerns dictating what news reaches the public, and at the time my resources were limited by what editors and publications would pay me to shoot, as I had not yet discovered independent journalism.

Street Artist at 2011 ArtPrize Photo by Michigan Municipal League

Image by Michigan Municipal League (MML)
The theme of the 2011 Michigan Municipal League Convention was Placemaking. Placemaking is about building communities where people want to live work and play. Practicing what it preaches, the League created the Center for 21st Century Communities: www.mml.org/resources/21c3/about.html. This program identifies eight assets that make for vibrant communities. Those eight assets are physical design and walkability, green initiatives, cultural and economic development, entrepreneurship, multiculturalism, messaging and technology, transit and education. The League had its Convention in Grand Rapids during ArtPrize this year because the city and ArtPrize show several of these assets at work. ArtPrize in just a few short years has become one of Michigan’s premiere events. The league took some time out from Convention to enjoy the many sights and sounds of ArtPrize and put them together in this photo set on flickr. To view other photos from the 2011 MML Convention on flickr go here: www.flickr.com/photos/michigancommunities/collections/721…. For more about the Michigan Municipal League and what we do go to mml.org. For more about Convention go to www.tour.mml.org and follow the League and the Convention on Twitter at @mmleague and the hashtag #mmltour.

"My Man B" cameraman Bryan Roy doesn’t think the G.I. Joe movie will be as good as the comic books. Editor Lawrence Thomas, "LT", once hit a homerun into a parking lot smashing a car’s window. He got beat up. Editor Bryan Maxwell, "Weezie", is a deal closer. Bottomline.

Michigan Municipal League members and Convention attendees

Image by Michigan Municipal League (MML)
The Michigan Municipal League’s 114th Annual Convention took place on Mackinac Island Oct. 3-5, 2012. The annual convention moves throughout the state each year with previous years taking place in Grand Rapids (2011), Dearborn (2010) and Kalamazoo (2009). The 2013 Convention will take place in Detroit. The Convention is a chance for Michigan’s municipal officials to learn about the latest topics impacting communities around the world. The 2012 Convention focused on the "Tools of Placemaking" and what Michigan’s cities, villages and urban townships need to be economically competitive in the 21st Century. The Convention was packed with numerous education sessions and workshops but time also was provided for networking because learning from fellow municipal leaders is one of the best ways to better your own community. For more about the League and what we do go to mml.org. For more on Convention go to convention.mml.org. Also follow the League on Twitter at @mmleague and the hashtag #mmlconv. In addition, the League now has posted links to the powerpoint presentations, videos and photos compiled from the Convention. They are now all on our Resources and Recaps page that you can find by going here: www.mml.org/events/annual_convention/index.html. Also, we shot video of all the CEA presentations and main Convention speakers and you can find those here: www.mml.org/events/annual_convention/cv12/video-index.html.
