“Tell Michael it was just business.” Those were among the last words of Sal Tessio in the Godfather. The line falls nicely into the notion that business people, especially successful business people, are cold and calculating with the rational mind the dominant half of their gray matter. Were it only true. My life in the business world has taught me that these supposed cold hearted, rational thinking sharks are just as prone to new and flighty trends as their teenage children. Typically these trends are harmless, albeit annoying to the folks on the front line forced to endure them. Sometimes the trendy turns out to be an enduring idea like, “the world at your fingertips” that spoke of the PC and Internet growth. Then there are the truly stupid ideas….

The idea of universal homeownership and the resulting lower credit standards cooked up to make the American dream come true was not only heart- stoppingly stupid, it may have been the worst business idea of all time. The fall out from this idiotic idea is being felt in every city in the US. In Detroit and Michigan, it served to accelerate an already desperate condition and caused a level of harm that will likely take a generation to correct and two generations to remove the psychic sting. What galls me the most is how the crowd that caused all of this got off more than scot- free, they got off rich. Save the wiped out stockholders of Lehman and AIG; all the rest, the math wizards, boardroom soft talkin’ slick asses and smarmy politicians are either in comfortable retirement, or worse, in the same place they were when this all hit the fan. Never mind they were the ones pitching the shit at the fan. I am not certain a crime was committed- I think they were more stupid than criminal- I am certain some high placed folks owe a refund. At a minimum, wouldn’t you think, they would be required to pay back all of those bonuses they collected based on- what we now know to be- vapor numbers from cooked books?
