Panel Above Door of Blegen Library

A few nice reading resources for teachers images I found:

Panel Above Door of Blegen Library

Blegen Library, once the University’s Main Library, was deemed too small in 1963 for the University’s growing collection and enrollment. The Main Library’s collection moved to Langsam Library in 1978. After this move, the building was renamed Blegen Library and was renovated and reopened in 1983, housing the Archives and Rare Books Library, the College-Conservatory of Music Library, the Classics Library, and the Curriculum Resources Center (now the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services, or CECH library in Teacher’s College).

The year 2005 marked the 75th anniversary of the former Main Library, now Blegen, and the 110th anniversary of University Libraries. The renovation of the Main Library created a drastically different interior. Previously, there was a large, grand, open entrance hall to the library. Upon renovation, this space was divided into numerous floors to allow for multiple divisions of the building, not just one library. Fortunately, “the beautiful architectural details were preserved and cleaned.” There are statues, chandeliers, carvings, inscriptions, and decorations found inside and outside the building.

Carl Blegen, the building’s namesake, is known and respected for his groundbreaking archaeological findings in Troy and Pylos. Blegen is also known for developing modern scientific methods in archeology. UC earned a reputation around the world as a research institution, largely due to the archaeological excavations of Carl Blegen and others in the Classics department. Blegen had a “single-minded driving ambition…to uncover the ancient civilizations,” indicated by the fact that he listed the University of Cincinnati as his “office,” and “‘9 Plutarch Street, Athens 9, Greece’ as his ‘home.’” His tremendous findings include the palace of Nestor, a King who played a part in the Greek siege of Troy; and Linear B writing tablets, which were evidence that Greeks of that time could read and write. Blegen wrote multiple books relating to archaeology, and contributed much to the University of Cincinnati. After studying and receiving degrees at multiple notable institutions, including a Ph. D. from Yale, Blegen went on to work at the American School of Classical Studies, followed by 30 years at UC as a professor of classical archaeology from 1927 until 1957 and the head of the Department of Classics during 1950 to 1957. Carl Blegen died at the age of 84 in 1971 in a Greek hospital.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In 1927 the university commissioned Harry Hake, a rising star in Cincinnati architecture, to designed a new library almost next door the the existing Van Wormer Library . . . The new building was also designed in the Greek Revival style, with a series of inscriptions and bas-reliefs carved into its facade that represent the pursuit of knowledge. Within the parapet above the door, the scene represents modern civilization as the product of Eastern and Western intellectual history, represented by the Hebrew and Latin words for light and various symbols of knowledge, such as an Assyrian winged lion . . . Below the fifth floor windows are two panels representing great thinkers and scholars. . . In the doorway of the library are two groups of bronzes, sculpted by George Marshall Marin, depicting Minerva and a series of bas-reliefs that tell the story of bookmaking.
Originally the interior was marked by a large open rotunda, surrounded by rooms. The stacks were constructed out of cast iron . . . In 1978 the general collection was removed to the new library across campus and the interior of the structure was redesigned to accomodate a variety of offices . . . At the time of its remodeling the library was renamed after archeology professor Carl Blegen.
interview tips for human resources assistant at Riverside Superior Court?
Question by Lotus Blossom: interview tips for human resources assistant at Riverside Superior Court?
I have not been on many interviews and i am incredibly shy. The hardest thing for me is trying not to give generic answers. “hardworking, honest loyal etc” i want to stand out because i realize anyone can say that about themselves but i’m not sure how to make them see it. I am 21 years old and am currently working at the court as a temp employee through an outside agency, and i’ve had interviews with them before and not gotten the job. I don’t have much experience with human resources but i have an excellent resume and have no problem getting the interviews. i just need some advice on how to make an impression
Best answer:
Answer by ruvic
There is a saying that first impression last. While your resume’ seem impressive there is yet another conclusive evidence you need to accomplish. By convincing the human resource officer that what is mentioned in your curriculum vitae is a product of pure and fruitful painstaking burning of eyebrow or hard work. In other words, you must be able to articulate and explain adequately all essential impressive experiences and knowledge on the job you intend to assume.
STAR WARS™: The Old Republic™ – Timeline – Darth Malgus
This is the fourth video in a series of timeline entries from the Sith Archives on Korriban. Official site: www.swtor.com Join the Silent Council — We don’t just play games — We make them. www.silentcouncil.com Darth Malgus Destroyer, Discoverer, Diplomat In the modern history of the Sith Empire, Darth Malgus stands out as a curiosity. As a fierce frontline warrior in his early years, Malgus took an alien lover, treating her more as a wife than a slave. She served at his side during his most successful campaigns, including the destruction of the Jedi Temple on Key Facts * Homeworld Dromund Kaas * Birth Name Veradun * Most Famous Kill Jedi Ven Zallow Coruscant. He employed mercenaries from species long thought untrustworthy and learned dozens of languages. Most unusually, Darth Malgus walked away from the power games of the Empire after the Treaty of Coruscant. As top-ranking Sith fought to control the armies and resources that traditionally lead to seats on the Dark Council, Darth Malgus led military expeditions into the Unknown Regions, claiming new territories and furthering the influence of the Empire as a whole. Often a dissenting voice on policy issues, Malgus nevertheless can be counted on to take orders and has no power base to speak of. This combination has kept even those Sith who hate his constant calls for change from moving against him.
What really happened? 9/11 Theories 1. US foreign policy in the Middle East provokes the attacks, and the CIA failed to see them coming. NORAD was not able to intercept hijacked planes fast enough. 2. The CIA knew the attacks were coming. NORAD stands down to allow the attack to proceed to start a war to gain access to oil in the Middle East. 3. The US government supplied terrorists with training and access to carry out these attacks. 4. The “terrorists” were actually CIA agents, disguised as Muslims or hired from Saudi Arabia. 5. The World Trade Center was prepped for demolition before these attacks and Larry Silverstein collects insurance that was recently updated to include “acts of terror.” 6. The planes were actually military planes equipped with missiles that caused the explosions. 7. The actual planes were replaced by military planes during flight, and the civilian planes were escorted to a military base and the passengers executed. 8. A cruise missile hit the Pentagon rather than a plane. 9. No planes were used at all. All video was doctored to include a plane or hologram. What is true is what happens next: 1. The only buildings destroyed or experienced partial collapses that day were all 7 WTC buildings and a church. 2. We are told who was responsible for the attack 1 hour after they occurred. 3. War is declared on Afghanistan before we know where Osama bin Laden is. 4. Shortly after, war is declared on Iraq because they had weapons of mass destruction. WMD’s are
Q&A: Is Actuarial Innovations, Actuary resources, or Medical Innovations of Howard Butler a scam?
6789776422 31b41b73c2 m Q&A: Is Actuarial Innovations, Actuary resources, or Medical Innovations of Howard Butler a scam?
by US Department of Labor
Question by : Is Actuarial Innovations, Actuary resources, or Medical Innovations of Howard Butler a scam?
I saw an ad on careerbuilder.com for this organization “Actuary Resources” for a position as an Actuary Analyst. The post does not mention anything about passing any exams. It just mentions that you have some college degree in Math., Statistics, Finance, or a related field and at least 3 hours of Calculus. So I think I am a perfect match. I emailed my resume and I get an email inviting me for a face-to-face interview even though their office is in Tennessee and I am a resident of South Carolina. Anyway since I was trying to start a career I rushed to book a $ 250 air ticket and reserved a hotel room.
But Howard Butler had it all planned. His company has 3 different names “Actuary Resources”, “Actuary Innovations Inc.” and “Medical innovations”, as I told you before he got it all planned. He knew that only desperate job seekers would respond to his ad and would travel hundreds of miles for interviews. So he acts during the interview as if he is checking the resume and it is like he has not seen your resume when you emailed it through careerbuilder.com, and he goes like “oh, see, you have to at least pass Society of Actuaries Exam P in order to be eligible for the job and to pass the exam you have to join our 10 hour review class for $ 380″. It is like you had never sent them your resume or the post had not been spacious to include such a requirement”. But as I told you my friends before, it is all part of the scam he masters and he keeps telling you lies about how many companies he has contracts with and how many job offerings he got in his drawers just awaiting your success in the exam and of course your $ 380. To all job seekers in actuarial science fields do not fall in this scam!!!
Non-motorized boating pilot program comes to an end
LOS ANGELES — When the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles District, granted a license in July for a seven week non-motorized boating pilot program on the Los Angeles River, the Los Angeles Conservation Corps quickly booked the allotted tours.
“It took about 10 minutes for the 280 tickets to sell, once we posted the announcement on line,” said Yasmin Mero-Corona, program coordinator, Los Angeles Conservation Corps. “We had another 300 on a waiting list to fill any no-shows. One gentleman stood by with his check every weekend until we had a cancellation for him to fill,” Mero-Corona added.
The test program allowed for no more than two trips per day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday beginning August 12 and ending September 25. The program was as much about education as it was access, with many of the tours featuring guest speakers, including Corps personnel, talking about the history of the river and plans for its revitalization.
The Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority supervised the two-hour canoe and kayak trips covering a 1.5-mile stretch of the river. While most of the trip is a leisurely ride the ‘Cattail Shoot’ provides a bit of excitement as the staff helps participants and their vessels through a narrow, shallow shoot and one portage point, ‘Rocky Rapids,’ that requires boaters to exit their crafts and navigate the rocks on foot.
“A mentor of mine when I was a biologist at New York District was fond of saying, touch the resource. That’s what accessing the river is to so many urban dwellers in Los Angeles,” said Josephine Axt, Chief, Planning Division, Los Angeles District, during her tour September 16.
“Even though there are nearby mountains where people can enjoy the outdoors, their day to day experience doesn’t usually encourage or encompass much of a non-urban environment. Accessing the river is symbolic of a shared vision many LA residents have of the city embracing a more sustainable future,” added Axt.
For many boaters these trips represented their first access to the river and their enthusiasm was not tied to their skill level.
“The participants were nervous at first because for many adults, this was the first time on a canoe or kayak,” said Supervising Ranger III, Fernando Gomez. “However, at the end of the trip, they wanted more and some even said they were going to go out and buy a kayak to continue their experience, not on the LA River of course. For the skilled kayakers, they walked away with the surprise of how beautiful and calming the trip was,” Gomez added.
The Corps is an active partner in revitalizing and preserving the Los Angeles River, however, an important primary mission remains.
“I must be clear, nothing we do can jeopardize human safety or reduce the flood carrying capacity of this river,” said Col. Mark Toy, Los Angeles District Commander, during his opening remarks for the inaugural tour Aug. 8.
Now that the non-motorized boating pilot program has ended, no boating is authorized on the Los Angeles River. The river can, very quickly, become extremely dangerous, especially during the general winter storm season.
The Corps will review trip reports and lessons learned from staff and participants. Working with the stakeholders the Corps will carefully consider all options for boating on the Los Angeles River in future years.
Q&A: When is the best time of the day to call Human Resources, when checking on a job application.?
Question by GirlNextDoor: When is the best time of the day to call Human Resources, when checking on a job application.?
It seems like they never answer their phone. Or any officer workers for this matter. Why don’t office people ever answer their phone? When I leave a message they never seem to call back. Someone told me to call early in the mornings, and they are more likely to answer. What is true here?
Best answer:
Answer by Tobias Maximus
I would say wait until after lunch. These days, so many people apply for jobs that it’s nearly impossible to get back to all of them. They basically pick and choose who they want to talk to so unfortunately, that’s something that only a good economy will change…..good luck!
